Why wedding photography?

One question I often get asked is “How can I get into doing wedding photography as a career?”. I think before even asking that question everyone needs to really sit down and ask themselves “why do I want to do weddings”. I think there can be hundreds of really great and valid answers to that question. There is no correct way to answer this that I think will make you successful, but I do think its a great excercise and gives your new business something to stand on. One thing I think really missing from a lot of new photographers is a true sense of vision and purpose with their business. Creating a mission statement for your business can be a great way to get your vision down on paper and give your vision a purpose.

After answering that question the path to making a career out of wedding photography can be much more clear. If your goal is to be the most creative wedding photographer in the planet but your experience so far is in the engineering field, you might want to take some art classes or get a BFA degree. You might want to focus more on a traditional type of wedding photography or a journalistic style.

So for anyone out there that really wants to get started in weddings, take a little bit of quiet time one day and write down in one sentence what the mission of your company is going to be. Get something down, put it up on your desk and have this guide you in how you are going to get started. Then leave your statement in the comments below we would love to hear your mission statement and give you any pointers on how to get started.
