Renting camera equipment

We recently came across a company that rents lenses, cameras and accessories and was highly recommended by a few peers. borrowlenses.com is the website address if you are looking for some good rental equipment. When starting out our business we used to rent certain lenses or even backup cameras from time to time. If you are just starting out and just doing a handful of weddings a year it might make more sense at the start to rent some of your equipment. I am never a supporter of going into a lot of debt to start your business and renting can be a good option sometimes (remember to roll this into your costs of doing business though, read our photography pricing article is you haven’t yet)

So I decided to give them a call and check out their service. Their website is very straight forward and easy to use. I wanted to check out a fast canon prime lens to do a review so checked out the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM. Setting up an account was very easy, just a few bits of standard information and a credit card to pay for your rental are all that were needed. For lens rental they have 6 timeframes you can choose from (3 days, 1 week, 10 days, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks). Their pricing compared to another local store I used to rent from is very good. For digital bodies I used to rent they are about 50% cheaper than the main local store we have here. After submitting my order for the lens, everything arrived on the date it was due and was in perfect condition.

The lens was in a box with a very thick foam cut out to the exact size of the lens to ensure perfect shipping. The lens was in excellent condition, the glass surface was very clean and all caps and accessories (lens shade) were included. It looked like a brand new lens. A letter with return instructions and the due date was included along with a prepaid FedEx sticker to return the lens. Very simple process you get the lens for x amount of time, have fun with your new toy and then just drop it back off at FedEx. In communicating with them beforehand via email they were very responsive and helpful and are also on twitter at @BorrowLenses. They do have twitter only specials so follow them on twitter for their specials.

Also for people located in the Bay Area, Ca they do have pickup either from their office in San Mateo (rentals are available same day) or a few locations in San Francisco or San Jose (rentals are available next day). Check their website for pickup locations and additional information.

Right now they are having a 10% off first time customer discount. Take 10% off your first order by using coupon code “First10”.
Also if you need to rent a lot of equipment during the year they have a membership program. For $99/year you get the following benefits:
• Automatic 10% off on all rental orders placed and shipped during the membership period. This will be applied automatically to your order at the time of checkout. To get the discount make sure to log into the account you purchased the membership with.
• An increased level of rental item availability. If something is not available, all possible efforts will be made to ship the order to you, up to and including drop shipping a lens or camera from our suppliers such as B&H, J&R, Adorama, and others. If one of these vendors has the item you need in stock, while we do not, we will ship the item straight to you from the vendor.
• Free BorrowLenses.com t-shirt. You will get one of these when you sign up for the membership account. If you place an order immediately, we will send one to you with the order. Please let us know which size you would like with the order containing the membership.
• Cancellations with no fees. If you need to cancel the order with us for any reason, and we would normally charge you a cancellation fee, this would be waived for Member level orders.
