The light and dark areas of an image really control the viewers eye, peoples eyes right away first go to the lightest part of the image. So you always want to use that to your advantage to direct the reader to the most important part of the shot. I burn in the background of portraits a lot, I want the focus to be on my subject not the background. Check out this Dodge and Burn tutorial to see how to really make an image more dramatic by using these 2 simple tools.
