More iPhone 4S Camera Photos Compared To The iPhone 4

On Friday after waiting all day for the UPS truck to drive up with my shiny new iPhone 4S I was bummed to be last on the delivery route. Since I got the phone after 6:00 and then had to meet with a bride I didn’t have time to really test out the camera until long after dark. I took some comparison photos indoors of the iPhone 4S vs the iPhone 4 camera and posted those yesterday. It was really interesting to see how the new iPhone 4S camera performed in low light and also how the white balance was pretty drastically different.

Then yesterday in between portrait shoots I was able to take some more photos with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 to really compare the cameras in different outdoor lighting situations. Here are some of the results along with some thoughts. And for those of you who still think that a camera phone can’t create real art, check out this awesome video shot and edited fully with an iPhone; It’s all about the art and vision not the gear. Check out some real world iPhone 4S vs. iPhone 4 camera images below. What do you think about the differences, let me know in the comments below.

The iPhone 4S has a much better dynamic range vs. the iPhone 4 and the tonal range is smoother. This gives you a more realistic looking image and helps to keep detail where the iPhone 4 would loose detail.

Here is a zoomed in detail of the above rose shot and look at the detail in the shadow area, most of the iPhone 4 image is just a blotch of red while the iPhone 4S now starts to retain some detail in the shadows. The change in tonal range here reminds me of when I went from a Canon 20D to a Canon 5D full frame when it first came out. It was the first camera that made me feel like I wasn’t shooting digital again and was starting to gain back some of the depth that film had.

Here is another good example of a very contrasty situation (not shot with HDR on) that the iPhone 4S on the bottom just blows away the iPhone 4.

Overall I have to say that I am pretty pleased with the new camera that Apple put into the iPhone 4S and it probably will replace my Canon Point and Shoot that I carry around. As a professional I would love to carry around my 5d everywhere I go but the fact is that with a busy life I don’t always have the time to get a huge bag of gear ready just to head out to lunch with the family. I use a point and shoot often to capture those quick little life moments and will be shooting lots more with my iPhone now. Also the iPhone has so many great apps for editing and sharing that the convenience to get a great image, edit it and share on Facebook and Twitter are part of why it’s been such a popular camera.
