Lightroom 3 BETA preview

Lightroom 3 beta was released last week and is a free beta version for anyone to download and try out. The official release should come out around the start of next year (sometime in Q1 is what I have heard). I have used it to edit a few test shoots and so far it seems pretty stable for a beta release. Of course since it is a beta you shouldn’t use it for heavy daily work or any important files, I would suggest copying your files first just to be safe. If anyone hasn’t used Lightroom before and is interested in testing it out this is a great way to try it out for free. You can download the software at Adobe Labs website at:

Here are some of the big changes in Lightroom 3 beta:

• Brand new performance architecture, building for the future of growing image libraries
• State-of-the-art noise reduction to help you perfect your high ISO shots
• Watermarking tool that helps you customize and protect your images with ease
• Portable sharable slideshows with audio—designed to give you more flexibility and impact on how you choose to share your images, you can now save and export your slideshows as videos and include audio
• Flexible customizable print package creation so your print package layouts are all your own
• Film grain simulation tool for enhancing your images to look as gritty as you want
• New import handling designed to make importing streamlined and easy
• More flexible online publishing options so you can post your images online to certain online photo sharing sites directly from inside Lightroom 3 beta (may require third-party plug-ins)*

There are a couple improvements that look like really good improvements VS. Lightroom 2 and we will detail these with examples in some articles coming up next week. A couple of the things we will look at in detail are:

• Sharpening Improvements

• Color Noise Reductions Improvements

• Film Grain

• Post Crop Vignette!

Here is also a great video tutorial from Julieanne Kost showcasing the new ways to share and publish your images with Lightroom 3
