10 iPhone accessories that can help you with your iPhotography

If you are an iPhone user, you are lucky to have a camera too. This smartphone species gives you the opportunity of capturing real-life snaps by virtue of its high resolution in-built camera. So, this iPhone comes as bonus for the photographers, who will now be able to encourage their photographic spree together with letting him remain connected with the rest of the world. But the exciting news together with this is that there is plethora of accessories that makes photography with iPhone a pleasure.

1. Tripod Holder
This Tripod stand is the perfect companion of your iPhone for a great photographic experience. It comprises of a PVC case that is shaped wisely in order to accommodate your iPhone. The extension of the same is such that it ends up in a three-legged stand made from sturdy steel, just like a professional Tripod Stand. This metallic stand gives your mobile camera the alignment required for an outdoor shoot. Further, the brass threads provided with it lets your pricey handset stay secured while at work.

If you are considering upgrading to one of the latest Canon or Nikon DSLR’s and want to shoot video then check out this great comparison that I found from Dave Dugdale at learningdslrvideo.com. This has got to be one of the best comparison videos I have seen, he walks through real world situations. He covers everything from shooting video with the Canon 5D Mark III and the Nikon D800 in lots of different lighting situations and also their pros and cons with shooting stills and other functions like white balance.

Also Phillip Bloom has a great comparison review of these 2 cameras along with the Nikon D4. Its a very comprehensive review and check out the great comparisions of the 3 cameras with low light when he shoots video at a bar with all iSO ranges. You can see this around minute 16 in the video and its pretty mind blowing how great these cameras look at high ISO. It’s really amazing how far technology has come and when I tested out the Canon Mark III a few weeks ago what really blew my mind was the amazing performance at high ISO. You can see some shots I had taken to show off the high ISO of the Mark III here: First Impressions of the Canon 5D Mark III.

One certain type of app for my iPad that I have tried a few different apps out for is a great way to display my portfolio on my iPad. Ever since the first iPad was released one huge benefit I saw to the iPad was a really cool way to show my images to new clients. Its a great tool to showcase your work and now with the amazing retina display on the new iPad its an amazing way to really wow people. I reviewed the Portfolio for iPad app awhile back, and today I want to talk about a new app that has just been released called Portfolio Pro.

First of all the app is very straightforward and easy to setup which I do like. It has 2 main sections, the cover slideshow and then a list of galleries. The cover slideshow is similar to Flipboard if you are familiar with that app. It gives you an area at the top left corner to add some text and your logo and then has your images playing as a slideshow to fill the rest of the screen. Simply swipe from the right of the screen to flip open the app and arrive at your galleries.

Setting up the cover slideshow and the galleries is pretty straightforward. Any time you can triple tap to switch between the client view of the app and the edit view. When in the edit view for your cover slideshow you can add your own logo and text however you will only see this option to edit it when you turn the device horizontal. At first I was working with the app in the vertical view and clicked around all settings to find where to add a logo and couldn’t find it. I actually almost gave up and then by accident flipped the screen and saw the ability then.

When in the edit view you will be able to add images or videos from your iPad, Flickr or Dropbox. Adding dropbox as a way to import your images is a nice touch and makes things easier compared to a few other portfolio apps I have tried out. Once you select the images to import you can also add a title and description to the photos and organize the order of the images. Another pretty nice feature is for any gallery or even individual photo within a gallery you can “Hide” the photo or gallery. You might have a gallery that you don’t want all clients to see from the main menu so can hide it from the admin screen and then easily show it when you need to by unhiding it.

The app also has a fair amount of customizations that you can make to various things like the overall theme of the app, colors and fonts. You can’t customize the transitions of the slideshows though which I really would like along with adding audio. The audio for me is a fairly big one, whenever I show my work I want to have the perfect song playing that will add to the emotional pull people get from viewing your work. The audio is all part of the experience and important to have with a slideshow. Hopefully they will add this in a new version.

One thing I would really like to see them add is more file formats to include in the app like PDF’s. After I show my portfolio to a client I like to also have my PDF pricing list that I can review with them and keeping everything in the same branded app would be very helpful. The app also isn’t as responsive as I would like to see, sometimes there is a small lag although on the good side I didn’t encounter any crashes or major bugs that kept me from using the app. Hopefully the next version will speed things up a bit.

Overall the Portfolio Pro app for the iPad is very quick and easy to setup, gives you some nice custom controls over your portfolio and with a few small updates that I mentioned above would be a perfect app. I would give the app a 3.5 out of 5 stars and am looking forward to what they create in the future. You can get Portfolio Pro for the iPad in iTunes here for $9.99.

I always love the walk through images that Julianne Kost from Adobe creates. She always has some great examples on simple things we can do to to make our images really shine and the creative part about editing that can take our images to the next level. The post production work we do is much more than just adjusting exposure and has just as much creative input as the shooting process, so is always so important to the end result.

In this video she shows how to create the highest quality photographs by learning how to crop, remove lens distortion, correct perspective, make global and local color and tonal corrections in the Lightroom 4 Develop module. Enjoy the video and don’t forget to subscribe to our email updates at the top right of the site so you don’t miss a post. This week we have some great portrait tips, lighting info and Photoshop CS6 tutorials coming!

When I am out and about I am constantly shooting with my iPhone for personal photos. The iPhone 4S takes great photos for a point and shoot and like many of you I love to use Instagram to give my images a little creative flair. I created a set of Instagram presets awhile back to create a similar effect with my DSLR and have a lot of fun with these Lightroom presets.

Now with Lightroom 4 out for awhile I wanted to redo the Instagram Like Presets that I had created awhile back for Lightroom. There were a few refinements made since the Instagram filters have changed as well as optimization for Lightroom 4.

All of these filters have been revised for Lightroom 4 now and if you have purchased them in the past don’t worry. An email will be coming out shortly to you with a revised download. If you haven’t picked these up we are still offering them for an intro price at only $10! You get 19 Lightroom presets total, and the price will be going back up to $25 soon so get them now.

With the release of Adobe Photoshop Cs6 this week the question on a lot of peoples mind is if CS6 is worth the cost of an upgrade. Every year when Adobe releases a new update it’s always a difficult choice to make, should you spend a pretty good amount of money to have the latest and greatest software and will this improve your workflow at all? Personally for my studio I don’t upgrade every year unless there is a really compelling reason. I try and look above the cool new features and think about my daily Photoshop workflow, is there something in the new release that will help me save a lot of time? Or is there a new feature that I have been waiting for and would use daily in my workflow, not just a cool new filter I might use once but something I would use often?

So what’s new with Photoshop CS6 and is it a worthy upgrade? If you are coming from a recent version like CS5 there aren’t a ton of really big changes in CS6. I see this update as a small incremental update and in my opinion doesn’t really include anything thats groundbreaking or a must have. Overall there are some speed improvements that make a few filters blazing fast now like the liquify filter. Depending on how large of files you normally work with and what past version you are coming from the performance might be a big deal or it might not.

Here is a list of some new features in Adobe Photoshop CS6 (click on any of the links for past articles we have with more info)

Content-Aware Patch, Move & Extend – An easy way to retouch images

New Mercury Graphics Engine – Some big performance issues that some filters really take advantage of

Saving big files and liquify improvements in Photoshop CS6

Tilt Shift Blur – Although I would prefer to shoot with a tilt shift lens this is a good addition and works great.

New oil paint filter

– This gives you a lot of creative control to “paint” an image.

Improvements to Layers in CS6 – Now includes search and some other workflow improvements

New design tools – There are new type styles and vector strokes

Video tools – You can now use PS to edit video clips

New Crop tool – More precision in the new crop tool

Preset migration and sharing – Transfer your presets, workspaces, and settings

Adobe Camera Raw 7 plug-in – Reveal rich detail in both the highlights and shadows

Adaptive Wide Angle Tool – Now you can adjust for wide angle lenses to straighten objects

New erodible brushes – Brush things in with more realistic effects

Background Save – Just like many apps now PS will save your work in the background so no more lost work!

In general I think Photoshop CS6 is a nice update but if you are currently running CS5 there isn’t a ton of huge new features. If you are coming from an older version like CS3 or CS4 then it might be time to upgrade, with the performance boost and some of the new features above it might be time to upgrade. Also with the new creative cloud offering you can upgrade for only $29/month which is a great value for the entire CS6 suite.

I am excited today to release a new set of Lightroom presets that I think everyone will love! One of the great things about Lightroom can be how fast you can process images. I have used presets for my studio as an essential part of my workflow and it always helps to make the post production speed right by. Over the past few years I have created a few premium lightroom presets like our Instagram Lightroom presets (along with some great free Lightroom presets). Lately I have been spending a lot of time refining some of the presets that I like to use for my wedding work and created some brand new ones to offer a great new preset pack of 25 effects for wedding photography.

For the launch of these new presets we are going to be running a sale just for the 1st week. The normal price for the set of 25 is going to be just $25 but for the next week you can get the entire set for just $10! It’s a great deal and just like any of our products we have available, it helps to pay for the costs to keep the site running and keeps me writing more content for everyone to enjoy.

These give you a great range of looks from vintage to various types of black and white to give your image the perfect look. As with any presets these should be only treated as a starting “Guide” and then modified as needed based on your own style and the exact feel for that image you are going for.

To purchase just click the button below. Get them now for a great deal at $10 for the set, the sale will end on Friday May 18th. These were created for Lightroom 4 but also have been tested with Lightroom 3 and will work great.

I would love to see what you create with these, share some samples on our Facebook page so everyone can see.

Money Back Guarantee
My goal is to create some awesome photography products at a great value. I want to make sure that you love your purchase and will give you a refund within 15 days of your purchase if you are unhappy with these presets for any reason.

A few notes:
- These were created for RAW images and can be used with any version of Lightroom.
- Some presets have a specific version of LR4 that will be titled like this “Vintage – LR4″. The version without the LR4 was created in LR3 and both versions are included in the preset pack.
- If the preset doesn’t include a LR4 in the name they were created specifically in LR4 but have been tested in LR 3 as well.
- As with all Lightroom presets they might look different on each photo depending on exposure, contrast, etc… Remember to always use the presets as a starting point and customize from there to make the image perfect.
- If you have any questions just let me know, I can always be reached at the contact button on the top of the page or by leaving a Facebook comment below.
- If you love these presets please share them on Facebook, Twitter or +1 them on Google. I appreciate you spreading the word to your photo friends! A

There were a few very close entries but we came to the final pick of Melissa Kok’s beautiful lily image. It has a wonderful depth to the photo, and the starkness of the black and white processing on it really add’s to the overall feel of the shot. Beautifully done Melissa!

With the release of Photoshop CS6 Adobe made some small but really nice improvements to the layers palette. Today I am going to review my top 5 improvements that Adobe made to layers in Photoshop CS6.

1) Search! – This has been something that I have wanted for a very long time and am so happy its finally here. I am sure more illustrators and designers will be happy to have this compared to photographers but it still will be very helpful for certain workflows for me. Mainly when I design an album I have many images on the canvas and lots of design elements like lines, shapes, text, etc… This can easily add up to 20+ layers and is very cumbersome to go through to find the correct layer that I need to edit. Now you have 6 different ways that you can search your layers:

- Search by Kind. Here you will be able to search your layers by the following type of layers: Pixel type, adjustment layers, text, shapes or smart objects.
- Search by name. Perform a quick search based on the name of the layer.
- Search by effect. Say you want to quickly find all layers that have had a drop shadow applied, just use search by effect and select drop shadow.
- Search by mode. Use the layer blend mode to filter your results. Many times i’ll blend an image with the overlay mode and can pull up all layers with the overlay mode from here.
- Search by attribute. Here you can search by layer attribute like if the layer is linked, locked, has a layer mask applied or many other attributes.
- Search by color. If you tag your layers with colors you can easily use this search to filter a specific color tag.

2) Reveal/Hide effects on multiple layers. One of my biggest pet peeves with Photoshop when working on albums is I will have a large amount of layers and many of the layers will have effects on them. When I have a few effects per layer this makes the layer list really long. I would normally have to click the triangle on the right of each layer to hide the effects and clean up my layers menu. Now if you select multiple layers and click the triangle to hide the effects all layers you have selected will have the effects collapsed. Another cool shortcut is to click Option and then the triangle to collapse all effects for every layer. Click Option –> Triangle again to expand all.

3) Multi Select to modify blend modes. This is another really big time saver in my opinion. If you need to select a few different layers and change the blend mode now just Shift-Click to select multiple layers and then using the blend mode drop down make your new selection. This blend mode will adjust all layers you have highlighted!

4) Duplicate multiple layers at once. Another good addition to what you can do with multiple select now is duplicating multiple layers. Just select multiple layers and then click Command-J (mac) or Control-J (pc) to duplicate all layers selected.

5) Clipping a layer to a group. Another keyboard shortcut that they added was the ability to clip a layer outside of a group to the group below it. To do this just move a layer directly above a group and Option-Click on the line in between the layers. This will automatically create a clipping mask that applies to the entire group.

6) New icon for layers using Blend If. If you use the Blend If option under layer options you will now see a new icon directly in the layers palette to indicate this. It makes it very easy to spot out that you used the blending options by including this in the main layers view.
