When I am out and about I am constantly shooting with my iPhone for personal photos. The iPhone 4S takes great photos for a point and shoot and like many of you I love to use Instagram to give my images a little creative flair. I created a set of Instagram presets awhile back to create a similar effect with my DSLR and have a lot of fun with these Lightroom presets.

Now with Lightroom 4 out for awhile I wanted to redo the Instagram Like Presets that I had created awhile back for Lightroom. There were a few refinements made since the Instagram filters have changed as well as optimization for Lightroom 4.

All of these filters have been revised for Lightroom 4 now and if you have purchased them in the past don’t worry. An email will be coming out shortly to you with a revised download. If you haven’t picked these up we are still offering them for an intro price at only $10! You get 19 Lightroom presets total, and the price will be going back up to $25 soon so get them now.

PS Lets connect on Instagram, my username is digitalphotobuzz. Also I love to see what you create with these please share a sample of your work on our Facebook wall here:

I am excited today to release a new set of Lightroom presets that I think everyone will love! One of the great things about Lightroom can be how fast you can process images. I have used presets for my studio as an essential part of my workflow and it always helps to make the post production speed right by. Over the past few years I have created a few premium lightroom presets like our Instagram Lightroom presets (along with some great free Lightroom presets). Lately I have been spending a lot of time refining some of the presets that I like to use for my wedding work and created some brand new ones to offer a great new preset pack of 25 effects for wedding photography.

For the launch of these new presets we are going to be running a sale just for the 1st week. The normal price for the set of 25 is going to be just $25 but for the next week you can get the entire set for just $10! It’s a great deal and just like any of our products we have available, it helps to pay for the costs to keep the site running and keeps me writing more content for everyone to enjoy.

These give you a great range of looks from vintage to various types of black and white to give your image the perfect look. As with any presets these should be only treated as a starting “Guide” and then modified as needed based on your own style and the exact feel for that image you are going for.

To purchase just click the button below. Get them now for a great deal at $10 for the set, the sale will end on Friday May 18th. These were created for Lightroom 4 but also have been tested with Lightroom 3 and will work great.

A few notes:
- These were created for RAW images and can be used with any version of Lightroom.
- Some presets have a specific version of LR4 that will be titled like this “Vintage – LR4″. The version without the LR4 was created in LR3 and both versions are included in the preset pack.
- If the preset doesn’t include a LR4 in the name they were created specifically in LR4 but have been tested in LR 3 as well.
- As with all Lightroom presets they might look different on each photo depending on exposure, contrast, etc… Remember to always use the presets as a starting point and customize from there to make the image perfect.

There were a few very close entries but we came to the final pick of Melissa Kok’s beautiful lily image. It has a wonderful depth to the photo, and the starkness of the black and white processing on it really add’s to the overall feel of the shot. Beautifully done Melissa!

One thing I love to do here is give stuff away We have had some cool giveaways with tons of photography products from our sponsors and other great photo vendors and have some pretty cool photography competitions and contests coming up soon. The other day I was looking for a way to run a promo giveaway for my studio and ran across https://www.punchtab.com Which has a really easy way of creating a contest that people can share on twitter and Facebook.
When I heard yesterdays news on Instagram I thought it might have been a typo first, not really in who bought them but the amount. Being in the valley, I follow the tech news just about as much as I do the photography news and am used to seeing crazy big deals (OMGPOP for example). But I still couldn’t believe that little ol’ Instagram was worth 1 billion dollars in someones eyes. It’s a cool service that I do like to use (feel free to follow me @digitalphotobuzz) and I know they have a lot of users but still some crazy numbers.

To help celebrate Instagrams big news I wanted to run our Lightroom Instagram presets on sale for the day. For just $5 you can get filters that are similar to these Instagram filters. Sale will end on 4-11-12, but after that time still available for the great price of just $10.

A few notes:

These were created for RAW images and can be used with any version of Lightroom.
As with all Lightroom presets they might look different on each photo depending on exposure, contrast, etc… Remember to always use the presets as a starting point and customize from there to make the image perfect.

The official Canon Press Release

London, UK, 2nd March 2012 – Canon today announces the latest addition to its worldfamous EOS range with the launch of the new EOS 5D Mark III. The EOS 5D Mark III builds on the performance of the legendary EOS 5D Mark II, offering improved speed, greater resolution, enhanced processing power and extended creative options for bothstills and Full HD movies – providing unparalleled artistic freedom for the most demanding photographers.

Incorporating feedback from photographers worldwide, the EOS 5D Mark III offers improved performance in virtually every area. A new 22.3 Megapixel (MP) full-frame sensor offers the ideal balance of resolution for stills and HD movies and up to 6 frames per second (fps) shooting, a 61-point AF system and 63-zone metering provide greater speed, flexibility and accuracy. Powered by the latest DIGIC 5+ processing technology, the EOS 5D Mark III also features enhanced video functions, offeringimproved image quality alongside greater audio control – redefining creative possibilities for photographers and amateur videographers alike. “The EOS 5D Mark III represents a big step forward for the EOS 5D series” said Kieran Magee, Marketing Director, Professional Imaging, Canon Europe. “The EOS 5D Mark II is an exceptional camera and we’ve listened carefully to feedback from its passionate community of users to improve performance in every area. This camera has been designed to meet virtually any creative challenge – it’s faster, more responsive and features the tools to adapt to everything from studio photography to creative videography, while producing results of the highest quality.”

Enhanced performance
With its comprehensively upgraded specification, the EOS 5D Mark III is the ideal toolfor the growing number of photographers shooting both stills and movies. It incorporates a number of the features launched with Canon’s revolutionary EOS-1D X,providing vastly improved performance, flexibility, handling and durability. The camera’s newly-developed 22.3MP full-frame sensor provides increased resolution and finer detail, enabling the capture of a wide range of scenes, from sweeping landscapes to beautiful portraits. Higher speed continuous shooting also offers expanded creative possibilities. With an increased 8-channel read out, the camera comfortably handles a maximum full resolution speed of up to 6fps in bursts of 18 RAW images or over 16,000 JPEGs1, without the need for additional accessories. Additionally, the sensor’s advanced architecture offers a huge native ISO range of 100-25,600, expandable to 102,400, making it possible to capture clean, high quality pictures, even in extreme low-light conditions.

The EOS 5D Mark III utilises the same 61-point wide-area AF system as the flagship EOS-1D X, providing exceptional sensitivity, precision and speed. One of the most advanced AF systems currently available, it features an impressive 41 cross-type points and five dual cross-type points, providing unsurpassed accuracy across the frame. The customisable AF pre-sets introduced in the EOS-1D X are also available, helping the capture of traditionally challenging subjects, and providing additional reliability in ituations where subject movement can be unpredictable. Highly accurate exposures are provided by Canon’s acclaimed iFCL metering system, which incorporates a 63-zone Dual-Layer sensor linked to each point of the AF system. Focus information gathered from the AF system is analysed alongside colour and luminance signals measured by the metering sensor itself, enabling the EOS 5D Mark III to deliver consistently accurate skin tones and excellent results in a wide range of shooting situations.

Creative performance without compromise
The EOS 5D Mark III features Canon’s latest DIGIC 5+ image processor, which powers a range of new functions without affecting the camera’s performance. 14-bit A/D conversion provides smoother tonal gradation and transitions between colours, while in-camera HDR shooting combines three different exposures and allows one of five preset tone maps to be applied, enabling photographers to capture all the detail in high contrast scenes. With in-camera RAW processing and editing capability, photographers also have the option to immediately begin post-processing their images while still on a shoot. The increased power of DIGIC 5+ also enables a range of tools which contribute to higher image quality. Lens peripheral illumination correction, Lens chromatic aberration correction (lateral and axial) and high ISO noise reduction are all performed in-camera without affecting performance, allowing photographers to continue shooting without any camera lag. Additionally, in-camera image rating via a dedicated button makes it easy for photographers to organise images ahead of post-production. The EOS 5D Mark III features a new Creative Photo button, which enables users to quickly select Picture Styles and capture multiple exposures, as well as offering direct access to the HDR shooting mode. In playback, pressing the Creative Photo button displays a new comparative playback function, displaying two images side-by-side to allow photographers to view, magnify and compare the quality of different exposures mid-shoot. For situations where photographers want to avoid being noticed, such as weddings, the EOS 5D Mark III also features a new silent shooting mode that dramatically reduces the sound of the shutter and mirror, ensuring they can work quietly in the background. A continuous silent mode is also available, enabling photographers to capture fastermoving subjects without attracting attention.

Next generation EOS Movies
The EOS 5D Mark III builds on the reputation of the EOS 5D Mark II, with a range of new features introduced following feedback received from photographers to provide even better Full HD video performance. As well as offering the depth-of-field control loved by video professionals, the new full-frame sensor combines with the vast processing power of DIGIC 5+ to improve image quality by virtually eradicating the presence of moiré, false colour and other artefacts. The addition of a movie mode switch and a recording button also offers greater usability, enabling videographers to begin shooting immediately when movie mode is engaged. Additional movie functions include manual exposure control and an enhanced range of high bit-rate video compression options, with intraframe (ALL-I) and interframe (IPB) methods both supported. Variable frame rates range from 24fps to 60fps, and the addition of SMPTE timecode support provides greater editing flexibility and easier integration into multi-camera shoots. Users can also check and adjust audio during recording via the camera’s Quick Control screen and a headphone socket enables sound level monitoring both during and after shooting. Enhanced processing power provided by DIGIC 5+ also makes it possible to conveniently trim the length of recorded movies in-camera.

Professional build, easy operation
The EOS 5D Mark III has been built to offer photographers easy-handling and robust build quality. Its lightweight, high-grade magnesium body offers advanced weather proofing for protection against the elements, while the construction of the shutter has also been reinforced, with 150,000-cycle durability making it ideal for repeated, everyday use. An enhanced version of the Intelligent Viewfinder featured in the EOS 7D offers approximately 100% coverage, as well as an on-demand grid display via the builtin transparent LCD. The same reinforced 8.11cm (3.2″) Clear View II LCD screen as used by the EOS-1D X provides high quality framing and playback in all conditions. 1,040k-pixels provide the resolution to accurately check image sharpness and focus, while the gapless structure design introduced with the EOS-1D Mark IV prevents reflections and protects against dust or scratches. A headphone socket and locking mode dial have been included, while the inclusion of a UDMA 7-compatible CF card slot plus an SD card2 slot enables shooting to both cards simultaneously, auto switching when the one in use becomes full and the option to copy images from one card to the other in-camera.

Digital Lens Optimizer – new in Digital Photo Professional v3.11
The EOS 5D Mark III comes complete with the most advanced version of Digital Photo Professional (DPP) yet – Canon’s free, in-box software enabling high-speed, high quality processing of RAW images. New in DPP v3.11 is Digital Lens Optimizer – a revolutionary new tool designed to drastically improve image resolution. Digital Lens Optimizer (DLO) precisely imitates lens performance, with a series of complex mathematical functions replicating each stage of the journey of light through the optical path. Using this information DLO can correct a range of typical optical aberrations and loss of resolution caused by a camera’s low pass filter, by applying an inverse function to each shot to take the image nearer to how the scene appears to the naked eye. This creates exceptionally detailed, high-quality images with highly manageable file sizes, providing photographers with maximum image quality and greater flexibility.

EOS System compatibility
As part of the EOS System, the EOS 5D Mark III is immediately compatible with over 60 EF Lenses, including the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM – the new, essential wide-angle zoom lens from Canon’s famous L-series. The camera is also compatible with a newlyannounced range of accessories designed to offer extended creativity, including the Speedlite 600EX-RT – a high performance TTL flash with wireless radio connectivity. Additionally, the new Battery Grip BG-E11 offers greater handling flexibility alongside the ability to double the camera’s battery life.

I always love to answer your photography questions, its really what started the idea of this site and I think is a great way to get some of the top issues that people are dealing with in the open and answered for everyone. Today I am going to cover a few questions that came in on Facebook and Twitter, so here you go…

Question from Kylie on Facebok “How do I take photos indoors and not have the end result with so much noise in the photos?”:
A: Noise really comes from 2 things, high ISO and bad exposure. I you really don’t want noise then make sure to start off with an ISO lower than 800. This depends on your camera, some can handle high ISO better than others so first know your camera limit as to what you are not happy with for noise at certain ISO levels. Next, make sure that you have your exposure perfectly dialed in. If you are underexposing and then have to fix it later in Photoshop or Lightroom that will increase the noise.

If you don’t have enough light inside to get a good exposure then you have to either shoot with a faster lens and have it wide open (a 50mm 1.4 lens is a great, inexpensive and fast lens to shoot indoors with), or add light. When adding light many times having 1 flash isn’t going to be enough to do the job so knowing how to add multiple lights to a scene is key. If you are just starting to learn flash photography check out my earlier article; An Intro to Off Camera Flash.

Question from Alex on Facebook “I’m somewhat afraid of taking group photos at a wedding, reason enough not to book one yet, I worry to much as to where to focus in a group shot and will the picture come out soft in the end. 5dmki-24-70L-CactusV5′s-3X430exii.”
A: This is a pretty simple one to solve Alex but the key is light. Depending not he depth of the shot you will want to photograph the group with a mid range aperture. Group portraits at a church are usually the only time at a wedding I will shoot with a mid range aperture and normally with pretty flat lighting, but here is what I usually do. First get a sturdy tripod to secure the camera. I’ll normally be shooting at ISO 400 and set my aperture to f/8 to have a good range of focus (or f/5.6 depending on how deep the group is). Since churches are normally pretty dimly lit i’ll setup 2 lights about 5 feet to each side of the camera pointing directly at the group. Most of the times these are usually just Canon speed lights so I can set them up really quick and bouncing into an umbrella. I focus in the center and will have a well lit and sharp image.

Question from Chyna on Facebook “What is the most important thing to do in order to optimize a website? Well I guess that’s not really a photo question, but a photo business question.”
I have always thought websites should be a 2 pronged approach. First I want a pretty simple and straightforward navigation so when you get brides to your site they can find anything they need right away. Easy way to contact you, get information, along with the best of the best for your work showing.

The other part that is really key is getting your website SEO optimized. When I started my business when I was in my last year of school I wanted to have a tagline of “Fine Art Wedding Photography”. At the time I was finishing up a degree in Fine Art and really wanted my work to capture the artistic side of things. When building out my website over the years I always wanted to be found by the keyword “Fine Art Wedding Photography” so did a few different things to make that happen. First though before really focusing on getting keywords into your site you should think about what the top 5 keywords you really want to focus on and if they are worth your effort to focus on. “Fine Art Wedding Photography” is a very broad search term and won’t always bring me the brides I want so I focus on many keywords most which are much more specific and relevant like “San Jose Wedding Photographer” or even specific venues that I really like to work at.

Back to SEO optimization, I started to write out some key places to include keywords but this will be a fairly long article so hold on for that one. I’ll try to finish my thoughts on SEO and keywords in a new post later this week.

Question from Kathy “Any articles on how to build up portfolio and where to start on pricing? I found the $60 for 8×10 one. I REALLY want to help families who want custom portraits, but can’t pay $150 sitting fees. I’d like to make some spending money, but help more than make. Would be nice to pull in a few “full price” people.”

A: I have always believed that we should first focus on building our portfolio to a point where we think the work is very solid and at a point where it is a level above other professionals in your field. Up until then I don’t think pricing should be much of an issue, if you are still building the portfolio then charge with that in mind for everyone. Then once your work is ready charge as you should as a professional. Part of this means not thinking about what people can afford and REALLY don’t think what you can afford that will always throw you off and get you in the wrong mindset. Pricing should start out very simple, first think how much you would normally make in a career. Around here in the valley I would say if I am going to be an engineer how much would I make. Then take that salary and diving it by how many shoots you estimate on doing, after expenses. For ease of examples say you want to make $80,000 a year and do portraits. You plan on shooting $80 portraits a year so need to make $1000 per portrait session. That’s what you need to take home though, so figure you will take home only 30% after all costs. You really need to make $3,333 per portrait session to end up with $80,000 a year take home. Of course this is a very broad way of thinking of pricing and you should get much more detailed and granular but it gives a starting point and for post people makes them really think about how much they are charging.

I’ll have some more specific pricing articles coming out in a few more weeks so stay tuned.
Press release for the Nikkor AF-S 85mm f1.8G

The New Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Prime Lens Combines Practicality with Portability Resulting In A Versatile Portrait Lens
MELVILLE, N.Y. (January 5, 2012) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the addition of the new AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G FX-format lens to its legendary line of NIKKOR lenses. The new 85mm is a fast, fixed focal-length lens with medium telephoto capabilities and a large maximum aperture of f/1.8 that is capable of performing a wide variety of imaging tasks with amazing sharpness and clarity.

“Whether a professional photographer who needs extreme sharpness or a photo enthusiast looking for an affordable, lightweight lens with amazing clarity, Nikon photographers appreciate and rely on the vast selection and dependability of NIKKOR lenses for their imaging needs,” said Lisa Osorio, general manager of marketing at Nikon Inc. “The new 85mm f/1.8 is fully optimized for capturing amazing photos and videos, while providing the ability to utilize background blur to compliment the subject of their photo.”

A welcome addition to Nikon’s growing line of versatile prime lenses, the new AF- NIKKOR 85mm is ideal for travel, general photography, low-light, landscape, portraiture and capturing movies with extreme depth of field. The 85mm is designed to capture photos utilizing beautiful image blur achieved due to its large maximum aperture. Furthermore, the lens is lightweight, easy to carry, and provides an equivalent focal length of 127mm when attached to a Nikon DX-format D-SLR camera body.

The construction of the 85mm f/1.8 consists of nine optical elements, with a seven-blade diaphragm which contributes to a substantially more circular bokeh for a natural appearance to out-of-focus background elements. Additionally, instances of lens flare and chromatic aberration are suppressed using Nikon’s exclusive Super Integrated Coatings, which also help ensure vividly accurate color balance.

The new lens also comes equipped with a carefully engineered optical system optimized to deliver superior image quality. The integration of an ultra-compact Silent Wave Motor (SWM) ensures fast, whisper-quiet AF operation, which is essential when recording movies. The 85mm also features two focus modes, M/A (manual-priority autofocus) and M (manual) to further enhance versatility and adapt to a shooters needs. Additionally, Internal Focus (IF) design prevents the front element from rotating, allowing for the use of filters and attachments.

Price and Availability

The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G will be available in March 2012 for $499.95.
