Bokeh: A book about cameras iPad app

There are more and more apps that have been coming out in the photography scene. Apps to edit your photos, learn more about photography and soon with being able to control Photoshop with your iPad the space is really heating up. We have reviewed many apps over the last few months and will keep reporting back on whats available in the mobile photography app space. You can always click on the Product Reviews link at the top to view some of our past iPad app reviews for photographers.

Today I am going to talk about an iPad app titled “Bokeh: A book about cameras”. This app walks you through 4 main parts about a camera to give anyone starting out in photography a foundation on how the camera works. The 4 main sections that it covers are:

  • Focus
  • Depth of Field
  • Exposure
  • Zoom
  • Each section gives you a informative diagram along with a photo. The diagram is interactive, for example on the focus topic it shows a photo of a train and you can turn the lens on the diagram to ‘focus’ the photo. The interaction is cool and it’s a really good way for people to learn, as you turn the focus on the diagram it will change the focus on the example photo in the lesson in real time. The 4 sections also give you a lesson which goes into some of the technical details about that function of the camera.

If you are new to photography and don’t really quite understand depth of field yet or have a good grasp on exposure this is a good intro to these topics for only a few bucks (right now its priced at $1.99). For everyone else though it isn’t really a full “book on cameras” and while the interactive parts of the app are cool to play around with there isn’t really much for you to learn if you already know the basics of your camera. It is a very simple app and you really can read through the 4 lessons in under 15 minutes. If you are brand new to photography the diagrams can help and I would give this app a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I just wish that it had more content. If you have already learned the basics of your camera there won’t be much for you to see here, you might save those iTunes credits for a new fun game.

It’s $1.99 in the Apple app store and you can get it here: Bokeh: A book about cameras iPad app
