Today’s post is a product review on something that isn’t as fun or sexy as Lightroom or Aperture but still can save you a ton of time and really has helped me keep organized. As tax time is coming closer I used to really dread April 15th. For me it was time to open my huge box of receipts that I have been collecting along the year and organize them into folders and then break out the old calculator and add things up. Sometimes halfway through a huge list I would hit the wrong button on the calculator, loose my info and have to start over. It was always a really frustrating process. Enter neat receipts into my life and everything got much, much more organized.
Neat receipts is basically a small scanner for your receipts. It scans and does text recognition on your receipts and populates some fields for you. Normally it’s pretty accurate and will fill in the company name, date and amount. I will quickly verify that the info is correct and then categorize that receipt and move on to the next one. The scanner is pretty quick and if you keep up on your receipts every week or so it really isn’t much work at all. The great thing is once the end of the year comes everything is already categorized and gives you a total amount. Also if you ever need to find an old receipt it’s all searchable, so pulling up your old info is a breeze and can come in really handy sometimes.
I also use it to scan and organize certain documents that are sent in. Instead of having filing cabinets everywhere in the office, I scan and organize all of the important docs and then recycle the paper. Only takes a few minutes if you just have a handful to scan and when you need to find something it’s right at your fingertips.
If you are looking for a way to keep your office organized I highly recommend neat receipts! (and a little note, Neat Receipts does not sponsor this website in any way I just believe they have a great product)
Also here is a little demo video from them:
